Degeneracy loci and polynomial equation solving
نویسندگان
چکیده
Let V be a smooth equidimensional quasi-affine variety of dimension r over C and let F be a (p× s)-matrix of coordinate functions of C[V ], where s ≥ p+ r. The pair (V, F ) determines a vector bundle E of rank s− p over W := {x ∈ V | rkF (x) = p}. We associate with (V, F ) a descending chain of degeneracy loci of E (the generic polar varieties of V represent a typical example of this situation). The maximal degree of these degeneracy loci constitutes the essential ingredient for the uniform, bounded error probabilistic pseudo-polynomial time algorithm which we are going to design and which solves a series of computational elimination problems that can be formulated in this framework. We describe applications to polynomial equation solving over the reals and to the computation of a generic fiber of a dominant endomorphism of an affine space.

متن کاملClasses of Degeneracy Loci for Quivers: the Thom Polynomial Point of View
The Chern classes for degeneracy loci of quivers are natural generalizations of the Thom-Porteous-Giambelli formula. Suppose that E, F are vector bundles over a manifold M and that s : E → F is a vector bundle homomorphism. The question is, which cohomology class is defined by the set 6k(s) ⊂ M consisting of points m where the linear map s(m) has corank k? The answer, due to I. Porteous, is a d...
متن کاملCondition Number Bounds for Problems with Integer Coefficients
An explicit a priori bound for the condition number associated to each of the following problems is given: general linear equation solving, least squares, non-symmetric eigenvalue problems, solving univariate polynomials, and solving systems of multivariate polynomials. It is assumed that the input has integer coefficients and is not on the degeneracy locus of the respective problem (i.e., the ...
